Mise-en-Scene Psycho


Mise-en-Scene is a tool which can be used to create numerous amounts of emotions within the audience, it is technically the arrangement of a scenery, props, characters, lighting and sound in a film. It's used very well in many films most of which are thrillers an example would be Psycho. Mise-en-Scene creates feelings within the audience by placing specific props, lighting and sounds during certain scenes in certain parts of the story, for example Mise-en-Scene is able to clearly reveal a characters personality and identity.

Near the end of Psycho the mysterious character Norman Bates is set in the center of the frame, this is done so that he becomes the focal point of the audiences attention. During a scene the lighting is purposely used so that half of Norman Bate's body is covered in darkness and the other half is not,  this creates an idea in the audience that he must have two different sides which is not ordinary as it imitates similar to the contrast of light, how Norman Bates is with more than one personality. As we unsuspectedly found out  as  soon as we watched 85% of the film, Norman Bate's was Marion Crane's Murderer he was his mother! During this scene strong music is played to enhance the feeling of surprise and tension this is a method of Mise-en-Scene because it changes the context of music within the scene.

This film is one of the best films to show Mise-en-Scene as it has a lot of Mise-en-Scene within it, it has efficiently used costumes, props, lighting sound and
