Preliminary Task and Evaluation

This is the finished product of our preliminary task. It includes 3 methods of continuity editing such as, Eye-line-match, Match-On-Action and Montage sequence.

Our story for the preliminary task was  about two best friends arguing. It started of with a plan for them to meet at a certain time but the other friend was late, As a result they got into an argument and it ended up with a broken friendship and one empty chair. We succeeded in including all three types of continuity editing within our preliminary task however I believe that a lot could have been improved. First of all during our shot reverse shot, I think we lacked enough conversation. We also failed to include the shoulder during the shot, reverse shot which didn't help in hinting to the audience that a conversation was taking place. The second problem is that during the shots we took with the camera there were some areas in which we I failed to match the action of the previous clip, this as a result made some of the scenes look odd and choppy. The final improvement which could have been made is that we could have included an Eye-line-match between the two characters which could easily represent the implementation of and Eye-line-match in a everyday conversation. In conclusion we did an ok job in our preliminary task.

Eye-line-match is done by recording a character looking at something off screen, afterwards the shot is cut off and then brought back to what the actor is supposedly looking at. This creates a smooth transition as it creates the effect as though we see the vision of the actor in their situation.

Match-on-action is done by recording the same action from one vision to another after both clips of the characters action is combined to create a illusion of them continuing their action. This method is mostly used for scenes like opening doors and or as a method too smoothly transition into another angle of vision.

Montage Sequence is done by using one seen to create a illusion of what the character is feeling, they do this by preparing the audiences prediction on an action. This is evident in the montage sequence used in Psycho where the knife is put into the shot and then immediately after they show the person who supposedly got stabbed. However through all this they don't show any evidence of the character being stabbed it just hints that they did in other words they prepare their mind for the action.
